Huntington, NY…
Well-known case management industry leader Catherine M. Mullahy, RN, BS, CRRN, CCM, president of Mullahy & Associates, LLC (Huntington, NY), one of the nation’s leading healthcare consulting and case management training firms, is not at all surprised at the recently reported findings of the Commission for Case Manager Certification’s “2014 Role and Function Study.” Mullahy, author of The Case Manager’s Handbook, Fifth Edition, and a strong proponent of the value of case management in improving our nation’s healthcare, said the findings on the higher demand for case managers and the value employers place on certification is consistent with our changing healthcare landscape.
“Our nation has just gone through a major upheaval in healthcare, at the same time that its demographics are challenging our delivery systems more than ever,” said Mullahy. “The graying of America, coupled with higher incidences of chronic illnesses, along with a growing multicultural population has placed greater strain on our healthcare providers. Well-trained, experienced and certified case managers are proving to be a critical resource in helping address these challenges, while facilitating better patient outcomes and reducing the number of preventable hospital readmissions.”
Mullahy, whose firm, last year, was designated as a Continuing Education Provider for the Commission for Case Manager Certification®’s (CCMC, http://ccmcertification.org, Mt. Laurel, NJ) CMLearning Network® (http://ccmcertification.org/cmlearningnetwork), feels strongly about the importance of Certification. As evidence of this belief, Mullahy & Associates developed a new Case Management Certification Workshop which Mullahy and her partner, Vice President Jeanne Boling, MSN, CRRN, CDMS, CCM, conduct. The two-day educational workshop gives case managers seeking certification the opportunity to gain broad, in-depth information on the most need-to-know subjects. Mullahy’s book, regarded as the definitive reference book on best in class case management, serves as the foundation of the course.
“There’s no question that healthcare providers, insurers and plan sponsors are taking a new, hard look at case management and realizing it may well be the lynchpin they need to effect much needed changes in our healthcare delivery system,” continued Mullahy. “The Commission’s findings validate this, and the increased focus on quality metrics and ethics as core competencies for professional case managers. Certification, of course, emphasizes these areas and makes a strong case for the need for case managers to have extensive knowledge across many areas, from care management to quality controls, reimbursement methods, supports systems, legal and ethical issues.”
Mullahy also applauded the Commission’s finding that “a far greater percentage of employers, 40.2%, now require certification; a 14.7% increase from 2009.” Certified Case Managers provide a vital value that should be recognized by employers both in terms of greater employment opportunities, as well as higher compensation.
